There are three main areas to keep neutral.  This does not apply to every situation but if you change favorite colors like you change your clothes then these neutral areas are important.   Starting with a neutral is important for keeping your space grounded.  Adding and changing color down the road will be easier if these elements are kept in a neutral color palette.

Walls

While it is fun to use color and there are hundreds of magazines full of walls colored in uncommon hues, most homes are not suited for such vibrant choices, especially when it comes to resale.  Keeping your walls neutral will keep you from hours of repainting when your design or color choice changes.   Having a comforting neutral color will keep your space timeless and ready for any color accents you want to throw in at any time.  *note: be sure to know what undertone your paint has.  www.thespruce.com has a good article on undertones.      Floors

If you’ve walked the isles of any home improvement store, you probably noticed that most of your choices are in the neutral color palette.  Although I have seen polished concert stained in some amazing vibrant colors.   Your flooring is the foundation to your space, and not just literally, it grounds (pun intended) your entire color seem for your room.  Next to your walls its the largest span of color in your home.  Keeping this neutral whither it is in the form of laminate, veneer, wood, tile, or concrete creates a canvas for more vibrant colors else where, like rugs.

     Furniture

Your furniture can be any style you desire and as long as it’s neutral they can transition as smoothly and timelessly as your walls and floors.  Classic pieces in neutral colors help to ground the design of a room.  By staying in a neutral color palette with your furniture you allow room for splashes of color in easily changeable accents like pillow or rugs.  So next time you favorite color changes, you don’t have to change your couch too!
