Accents: 7 ways to bring color & dimension into your room

By

Accents are special items you add to a room to draw your eye. They are used to add dimension and color to a space.

Pillows are a perfect way to have transitional color in a space.  You can make the room bright and cheery or warm and cozy by playing with your pillow colors.

Plants are another great opportunity to fill a space with color.  They bring a touch of freshness to a space and allow you to bring the seasons indoors.  You can bring color into your home through live plants or colorful replicas that never wilt. Whatever you chose, the options are endless.

Bowls/Vases/Platers are another option to add a drop of color and dimension to a table, mantel, or side table.  These pieces are as transitional as the holidays.  Having fun with these pieces not only adds color, but can also add additional storage for remotes, candy, or coasters that you don’t want left floating aimlessly around the room.

Furniture is always a great way to add a touch of color and dimension to a room.  These pieces are usually referred too as statement pieces and you better love that color because they are not as easily changed as a pillow or a vase.  However, they can add a lot of fun to a space.  They draw your eye and are usually the topic of conversation.  Having a piece like this can add focus to a room while incorporating color.

Rugs are a foundational piece and through pattern and color can add extra dimension to a room.  Choosing a pattern and color choice that fits your space can be rather tricky and time consuming, but once you’ve found the perfect compliment this piece will ground your room and help bring all the other elements together.

Art Work:  art is meant to be a conversation piece, something to drawer your eye and add balance to a room.  It’s a fantastic way to bring color into a space.  Whither you like modern or classical, drawing inspiration from a piece of art and pulling that style and color into a room can create a unique room that’s all your own.

Accent Wall:  I traditional like to keep my walls neutral, but making one wall of a room into a focal point has gained momentum in the past five years.  This is not so easily changeable so planning your accent wall carefully is important.  That being said, whither you are making your focal wall a solid color or adding dimension through wood slats or an ergonomic shape, this is a piece that draws you into a room.  It’s the first place you will look so you better make this wall and the room tie together well.  Don’t let this scare you, accents walls are fun and when done well become their own work of art!
